Emergency services evacuate leisure centre after 'suspected chemical incident'

A leisure centre in Rochdale was evacuated while emergency services responded to a 'suspected chemical incident'.

Police and fire crews were pictured outside the Oulder Hill Leisure Complex on Hudsons Walk at around 8am yesterday morning (Thursday). The Manchester Evening News understands that a possible chlorine leak had been reported.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene and the complex was evacuated 'as a precaution'. Firefighters inspected the site and were at the scene for just over an hour.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson confirmed that officers were called to the scene. They said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Yesterday morning (Thursday 15 December) just before 08:10am we received a report about a suspected chemical incident at a leisure complex on Hudsons Walk, Rochdale. Two fire engines from Rochdale fire station were quickly mobilised to the scene.

"A precautionary evacuation took place, and firefighters carried out inspections of the site and isolated heating and ventilation units. Crews liaised with site staff and were at the scene for just over an hour."
