Emergency services called to Merrion Strand after walkers get into difficulty during high tide

A pair of walkers were saved from a scary seaside situation today due to an incoming tide.

The two people, who were out walking along Merrion Strand at Sandymount, got into difficulty leading to a rescue operation involving several agencies.

The Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard, Dublin Fire Brigade, Rescue 116, National Ambulance Service and gardai arrived on scene after members of the public called for help.

Thankfully there were no reports of any injuries after both people were brought ashore.

Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard praised the quick work of the rescue services, and the quick-thinking members of the public who made the call for rescue.

Emergency services responded to the call (Dublin Fire Brigade)

They said: "Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard were tasked to reports of persons cut off by incoming tide at Merrion Strand.

"Multiple agencies responded, with Rescue 116, RNLI Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat Station inshore lifeboat, Dublin Fire Brigade, National Ambulance Service (NAS), An Garda Síochána responding also.

"On arrival, 2 casualties were identified with a crew from RNLI Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat Station making contact with the casualties. Rescue 116 landed on the sandbank and brought the casualties ashore.

"Dublin Fire Brigade checked over both patients as a precaution.

"Thanks to all involved and also to the members of public who dialed 112/999 after seeing the casualties in difficulty."

With Dublin Fire Brigade adding: "Earlier today working with @IrishCoastGuard & @RNLI we responded to 2 walkers in difficulty at #Sandymount.

"Airlifted by Rescue 116, they were assessed on scene by our paramedics. Firefighters from Donnybrook, Dolphins Barn attended #Teamwork"
