Emergency beds and hot meals for Glasgow homeless as City Mission to open for winter

Glasgow City Mission are opening up their Overnight Welcome Centre (OWC) next week, held in the charity’s building on Crimea Street.

For any individual who requires the services at the OWC, there are arrangements in place with partners across the city for a range of emergency beds. These offer refuge for anyone who needs it this winter, including those who may not be eligible for accommodation.

As they have done for the past 12 years, Glasgow City Mission and their partners are ensuring anyone in danger of sleeping rough is offered a bed for the night.

A spokesman for the charity explained: "Building on the experience and expertise of running a winter project for the last 12 years it is again our aim to make sure no one needs to sleep outside this winter.

"Each year we have looked at this issue afresh and adapted to the needs of our guests and the landscape in Glasgow. We are changing our model slightly again this year.

"Our Crimea Street day-centre will be open through the night, every night, from December 1 to 31 March. We serve dinner from 6.30pm until 8pm, after which, our overnight welcome centre team will be on site.

"Anyone who finds themselves in a crisis can come, or be referred by partners, to Crimea Street, where our trained staff will operate a safe, welcoming space. We will work closely with the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) out- of-hours service to access emergency accommodation

"Previously we were confined to one location in Glasgow in which to accommodate our guests. Now using Crimea Street as our base, we will be able to access an array of temporary accommodation across the city.

We are also doubling our housing settlement officer team so that the next morning they will follow up with guests who have accessed the service the night before, and develop a person-centred move-on plan for each individual.

The charity launched the centre in 2010, as a response to the severe winter. In 2010, the service changed and they opened an official city centre hotel. Last year, the OWC provided emergency accommodation for over 200 individuals. They also provide a hot evening meal, and 24-hour service.
