Emergency Alert: Everything you need to know about UK-wide phone alert on Sunday

Millions of people across the UK will receive an Emergency Alert on their phones and tablets on Sunday.

The alert is part of a Government trial and will see devices emit a loud alarm and vibrate at 3pm on April 23, in a nationwide test of the new public alert system.

A message will be received on 4G and 5G mobile phones, along with sound and vibration for up to 10 seconds and it's been advised that the alarm will sound even if the device is set on silent.

Here's everything you need to know about the alert:

What is an Emergency Alert?

Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.

In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.

The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send you an alert.

What day and time will it take place?

It will take place at 3pm on Sunday, April 23.

What will the alert say?

The alert will say: "This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby. In a real emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.

"Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information. This is a test. You do not need to take any action."

What to do when it happens?

Phone users will be prompted to acknowledge the alert by swiping or clicking the message before being able to continue using their device.

Can you opt out?

Officials stressed that it is easy to opt out of the system if people need their phone to stay concealed, either by turning off the alerts or simply having the phone switched off during the test.
