Emergency accommodation offered to residents due to Storm Christoph flood risk in Trafford

Residents in a village on the border of Trafford have been offered emergency accommodation if they want to leave their homes due to the risk of flooding.

The offer has been made to people in 13 properties in Little Bollington due to the threat of torrential rainfall, Trafford council's leader said.

The village sits on the border between Cheshire and Trafford.

Sale Leisure Centre is being prepared as an emergency centre if needed.

In a statement, councillor Andrew Western said: "At present we are NOT asking anyone to leave their homes in this area; however this offer has been made to residents in 13 properties in the Little Bollington area as a precaution."

Mr Western said there is potential for flooding in the Middle Mersey Catchment.

Homes in Didsbury and Northenden in south Manchester are already beginning to be evacuated.

Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey said anyone in an at risk property will be contacted.

The most likely area of flooding in Trafford is currently in Stretford, close to Sale Water Park, Mr Western said.

The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the water park.

The warning said 'river levels are rising at the Sale Ees river gauge' and will remain high until Friday.

Photos from earlier this afternoon showed land around parts of the water park had become submerged in water.

Water flooded onto part of a pathway following 24 hours of torrential rain.

Gulleys will be cleared across the borough, and will be prioritised in terms of flood risk.

Coun Western said: "The best thing anyone can do is stay indoors unless absolutely necessary or asked to evacuate.

"If we become aware of any further areas where there is a risk of households being flooded those areas will receive doorstep visits from council teams."

Earlier this afternoon, a top police chief warned that up to 3,000 homes are at risk of flooding in Trafford and South Manchester.

At the Mayor Andy Burnham's press conference this afternoon, Assistant Chief Con Nick Bailey said: "As we speak, residents across those areas are being contacted by the Environment Agency and local authorities to advise them.

"Alerts have already been put out, people there are being advised to consider evacuation procedures should that happen.

"We are going to start to see the overflow contingency provisions at around 5pm.

"That will reach a peak at around 11pm this evening where we will see flooding of those areas."

Anyone with flooding concerns is asked to contact 03330 035 865.

Resources are stretched and the response will prioritised in the interests of public safety, the council leader said.
