Elon Musk could resign as Twitter boss after losing his own poll

Elon Musk could step down as Twitter's CEO after he lost a poll on the social media platform. Last night (December 18) the billionaire promised to abide by the result of a poll he posted on Twitter asking whether he should step down from the top job.

At the time of writing 57% of people who have taken part in the poll have called for him to resign. More than 15 million people have taken part in the poll so far.

His Tweet read: “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.” The options available were simply "Yes" and "No".

The poll will last 12 hours and end at 11.20pm tonight (December 19). Mr Musk has only been in the job for two months.

Mr Msuk, who is the second-richest man in the world, has tweeted that people should be careful what they wish for. However, he has denied that he has already picked his replacement.

He said: “No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor."

Overnight, Mr Musk also liked a Tweet reading: “When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace becomes a circus. – Turkish proverb.”

It was not immediately clear whether this is an actual Turkish proverb. Its English form first started appearing online earlier this year after a Turkish journalist used a similar phrase about an ox turning a palace into a barn to describe his country’s president.

Mr Musk has had a controversial two months at the helm of Twitter. The businessman has his fans but has also made a number of decisions that have proved unpopular with users, such as unbanning users such as Donald Trump, banning linking to rival websites and claims that he has banned journalists who have reported on him.
