Elon Musk believes self-driving will become a ‘niche activity’ within 10 years

  • Elon Musk announced that Tesla's fully self-driving cars are expected to expand nationwide across the United States later this year, following their initial introduction in Texas.
  • Current Tesla robotaxi services in Austin, Dallas, and Houston have faced issues such as long wait times, frequent unavailability, and inconvenient drop-off locations, according to Reuters reporters who tested the service.
  • Musk predicted that within five to ten years, approximately 90% of all distance driven will be by AI in self-driving cars, making human driving a niche activity.
  • Both Tesla and Alphabet-owned Waymo recently issued recalls for safety defects, with Tesla recalling vehicles for delayed rearview camera images and Waymo for a risk of entering flooded roads at high speeds.
  • Musk also discussed SpaceX's progress toward reusable rocket launch systems and Neuralink's planned first implant of its Blindsight device to assist individuals with impaired vision, alongside a prediction of widespread humanoid robots within a decade.
