Election hustings for Portobello

Portobello voters are set to question the four candidates standing for election to the Edinburgh Eastern seat at a hustings event on Tuesday 19 April.

The constituency has been described as a 'microcosm' of the Scottish Parliament election, as Labour's former council leader Ewan Aitken aims to take out the SNP's justice secretary Kenny MacAskill.

The pair also have Scottish Conservative candidate Cameron Buchanan and Martin Veart for the Scottish Liberal Democrats aiming for the seat.

All four candidates will have their policies, views and ideas tested by the Portobello electorate at the evening hustings at Old Parish Church Hall on Bellfield Street.

Speaking on behalf of Portobello Community Council, organisers of the event, Leon Thompson said:

"The battle for Edinburgh Eastern is a microcosm of the national election. Can Kenny hang on to the seat for the SNP? Will Ewan secure it for Labour? Of course we could also see a major upset with Cameron and Martin working hard to take the seat for the Conservatives and Lib Dems respectively.

"Whatever the outcome it's important that voters get the chance to put their questions on the issues that matter to them to each candidate - this event provides that opportunity."

The hustings will take place on Tuesday 19 April, at Old Parish Church Hall on Bellfield Street in Portobello. Doors open at 7.30pm and questions can be sent in ahead of the event to portobello.hustings@hotmail.co.uk.
