EK Christmas Kindness campaign helps thousands of families in need

A East Kilbride Christmas Kindness campaign has helped thousands of families across the town with the local community coming together to help others.

The campaign was to help those most in need this Christmas was officially launched last month with a bumper £1000 donation.

It is a collaboration of a number of local groups, spearheaded by local charity Share Alike and supported by shopping and Leisure Centre EK, East Kilbride who made the initial donation.

A Christmas Kindness tree was set up at the centre management office where shoppers could pick up a tag, buy an appropriate gift and drop it off at the Share Alike unit.

There were also a number of drop-off points across the town.

East Kilbride Housing Association, Tesco, Morrisons Lindsayfield, South Lanarkshire Leisure, AGAPE and SAVI Kids also helped the campaign with support from local politicians including councillors and MP Dr Lisa Cameron and MSP Collette Stevenson.

And this year's figures show that the community's help was need more than ever - exceeding last year's total.

A total of 2348 gifts were collected with 1734 gift packs distributed for children and 605 gifts donated to older residents in the town.

And nearly 250 food parcels were also distributed.

Annmarie Campbell from Share Alike told Lanarkshire Live : “Once again the support we have had has been unbelievable and will mean so much to those most in need across the town.

"Everyone pulled out all the stops and it was a monumental effort. Thanks to all who donated and to every single person who has supported us."

Annmarie would especially like to thank all her volunteers, Kelvin Kabs drivers who helped distribute gifts, along with East Kilbride Fire Station and Dr Lisa Cameron MP and her staff.

A spokesman for EK East Kilbride told us: “EK shoppers and retailers have yet again shown their generosity and caring spirit by throwing their weight behind the Christmas Kindness campaign and we would like to thank them all or their tremendous support.

"As a result of the huge efforts of the Share Alike team and others throughout EK, those in need across the town, whatever their age, will have something to look forward to this Christmas.”
