Eintracht Frankfurt vs Liverpool LIVE: Champions League result, updates and reaction as Reds end losing run

Rampant: Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s fifth of the match - (Getty Images)

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Liverpool LIVE

Liverpool brought their four-match losing run to a spectacular end as they came from behind to rout Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1. Arne Slot named an experimental lineup featuring both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike as Mohammed Salah was dropped, and the new-look side took a moment to warm up.

The hosts opened the scoring with 26 minutes on the clock through Rasmus Kristensen, but Liverpool were ahead just over ten minutes later. Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, and Ibrahima Konate all scored in quick succession before half-time to leave the Reds in the driver’s seat, before Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai added to the pile-on after the break.

It was far from a perfect evening for Liverpool, though, as both Isak and Jeremie Frimpong were withdrawn with injuries. Slot confirmed at full-time that Frimpong was set for a number of weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring tweak, but did not give a timeframe for Isak’s groin issue. Catch up with the action as it happened below with our dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis.

FT: Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:54 , Alex Dakers

It’s all over in Frankfurt.

A heavy 5-1 loss for the hosts - astonishingly, their third such score line in three Champions League games this season, with two of them defeats.

But tonight is all about Liverpool, really, who snap a four-game losing streak in style.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:52 , Alex Dakers

90mins: Two minutes of stoppages.

A huge win for Liverpool tonight, this.

Mohamed Salah, desperate to score, can’t quite on this occasion in his brief cameo from the substitutes’ bench.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:46 , Alex Dakers

85mins: Liverpool could be forgiven for just seeing this match out at this point.

They’re knocking the ball around near the halfway line and occasionally testing their hosts’ backline with a long ball.

Frankfurt have offered little going forward since their opener in the first half - it has been pretty much one-way traffic since then.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:38 , Alex Dakers

77mins: Frankfurt’s turn to make a change, with Knauff off and Skhiri on.

Surely just a case of damage limitation now for the hosts.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:36 , Alex Dakers

75mins: Another change from Arne Slot now sees Ibrahima Konate replaced by Joe Gomez.

Resting the legs for Saturday’s match at Brentford, no doubt.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:35 , Alex Dakers

74mins: Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike are withdrawn for Salah and Mac Allister now.

Frankfurt’s fans applaud their former player Ekitike off the pitch; it was him who started the comeback just after the half-hour mark.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:34 , Alex Dakers

73mins: Liverpool, 5-1 up and pushing for more, are about to bring on Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister.

That’s not a welcome sight for Eintracht Frankfurt.

GOAL! Eintracht Frankfurt 1-5 Liverpool

21:32 , Alex Dakers

70mins: And just minutes later, there’s Liverpool’s fifth!

Dominik Szoboszlai looks up some ways from goal and decides to drill the ball low into the bottom left corner from outside the box.

He loves a long-range goal, the Hungarian! That one marked another assist for Florian Wirtz, too.

GOAL! Eintracht Frankfurt 1-4 Liverpool

21:28 , Alex Dakers

66mins: Florian Wirtz has his first Champions League assist for Liverpool, playing the ball across goal for Cody Gakpo to slot home the Reds’ fourth of the match!

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:25 , Alex Dakers

63mins: Liverpool are piling the pressure on again, and Conor Bradley - who had a good chance from a header in the first half - lets fly.

Michael Zetterer tips it onto the upright and Frankfurt’s fans breathe a sigh of relief.

It hasn’t gotten worse - yet.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:22 , Alex Dakers

59mins: Double change for Frankfurt.

Jean-Matteo Bahoya and goal-scorer Kristensen off, Jonathan Burkardt - the team’s leading Champions League scorer so far this season, with three to his name - and Nnamdi Collins on.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:19 , Alex Dakers

57mins: Up the other end, some lovely play by Mario Gotze earns Frankfurt a rare corner.

It’s cleared initially, and then Arthur Theate skies the second attempt.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:17 , Alex Dakers

55mins: It’s taken by Florian Wirtz...

... and that’s a good effort from the German midfielder - still searching for his first goal for the Reds - but Frankfurt goalie Michael Zetterer gets two hands to it and pushes the ball away with relative ease.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:17 , Alex Dakers

55mins: Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda is booked for hauling down Cody Gakpo.

Free-kick just outside the box for Liverpool...

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:16 , Alex Dakers

54mins: No changes yet by Frankfurt manager Dino Toppmoller, but some of his substitutes are warming up.

A reminder that Liverpool’s first change of the match was Jeremie Frimpong, who looked to have picked up a hamstring injury, being replaced by Conor Bradley early in the opening 45 minutes.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:13 , Alex Dakers

51mins: That half-time change means it’s Hugo Ekitike through the middle, with Chiesa on the right and Cody Gakpo remaining on the left of Liverpool’s attack.

Gakpo takes his latest corner, but Frankfurt manage to clear this one as it goes a little too deep for the Dutchman’s teammates.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

21:11 , Alex Dakers

49mins: And Chiesa goes close to scoring already!

In the second phase of play following a Liverpool corner, the ball is nodded through to the Italian - waiting patiently in the penalty box - but he can’t quite put it on target.

It was a difficult chance requiring some acrobatics, to be fair to him.

Back underway

21:07 , Alex Dakers

46mins: Play resumes in Frankfurt, with Federico Chiesa coming on for Alexander Isak.

We’re not yet sure if that’s a tactical or precautionary substitution by Arne Slot, but the Italian winger has been in good form.

Still no Mo Salah for Liverpool, though.

Liverpool back to their goal-scoring best

20:56 , Alex Dakers

I’m hearing that this is the first time Liverpool have scored three first half goals since December 2024.

They’ve left their hosts shell-shocked, and look to be on course to end their recent losing streak in style.

HT: Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

20:53 , Alex Dakers

The referee blows for half-time just as we complete the four minutes of added time.

Mercy for Frankfurt, who have some thinking to do after conceding three goals in the space of nine minutes to give up their early lead.

GOAL! Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 Liverpool

20:45 , Alex Dakers

44mins: Another corner, this one from the other side and converted by Ibrahima Konate, and Liverpool have well and truly turned this game on its head just before half-time!

The French defender, who has come under plenty of criticism recently for some lapses at the back, is earning plenty of cheers now from the travelling support after joining his central defensive partner Van Dijk on the score sheet.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-2 Liverpool

20:42 , Alex Dakers

41mins: Excellent defending from Conor Bradley, who slides in to block a dangerous looking chance in his box.

Play has been paused now as Frankfurt captain Robin Koch receives some treatment.

GOAL! Eintracht Frankfurt 1-2 Liverpool

20:39 , Alex Dakers

39mins: Virgil van Dijk heads home from a corner and Liverpool lead!

That’s the captain’s 26th headed goal for Liverpool, of his 30 total successful efforts in all competitions since his debut in 2018.

Good positioning from Andy Robertson - starting ahead of Milos Kerkez here, and having already registered an assist for Hugo Ekitike’s opener - to make space for Van Dijk to rise high and thump that one in with all his might.

(Getty Images)

GOAL! Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Liverpool

20:35 , Alex Dakers

35mins: Hugo Ekitike gets Liverpool back into it against his former club!

The Reds win back possession and Frankfurt’s backline is caught way too high up the pitch, leaving Ekitike to dash through on goal and poke the ball home for an equaliser against his old teammates.

A muted celebration by the Frenchman, but he left Frankfurt’s defence in the dust there as he latched onto a lovely through ball from Andy Robertson.

(Getty Images)

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 Liverpool

20:34 , Alex Dakers

33mins: The Reds’ latest corner, an in-swinger taken by Cody Gakpo, fails to find a red shirt in the box.

As a few previous efforts like it have, it ends in play being halted for a foul, this time on Frankfurt’s goalkeeper - who did well to push Conor Bradley’s header, from a Gakpo cross, out for that corner in the first place.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 Liverpool

20:31 , Alex Dakers

30mins: A sucker punch for Liverpool, that, after an improved spell in this match.

That was Frankfurt’s first real foray forward in what felt like ages, but it was a well-worked move and a well-taken finish.

GOAL! Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 Liverpool

20:26 , Alex Dakers

26mins: ... TO SCORE!

Frankfurt take the lead!

A sweeping move from near their own box on the left flank ends with former Leeds United right-back Rasmus Kristensen cutting in from the right wing to fire home through Andy Robertson’s legs and past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The home crowd has gone BERSERK!

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:26 , Alex Dakers

25mins: The Reds have definitely grown into this game, dominating possession after an opening five or so minutes when Frankfurt had much more of the ball.

As I say that, the hosts win it back from Florian Wirtz and work it down the pitch...

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:22 , Alex Dakers

21mins: Another corner for Liverpool, but Frankfurt head it clear with relative ease and the referee blows for a foul in the box on the hosts anyway.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:19 , Alex Dakers

18mins: Frimpong is down now, though, and has been for a few minutes with what might be a hamstring injury.

He limps off to be replaced by Conor Bradley.

A lacklustre start to his Liverpool career gets worse for the Dutchman.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:17 , Alex Dakers

15mins: Jeremie Frimpong tries to beat his man down the right hand side and after a tussle, the whistle is blown - Frankfurt’s ball.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:13 , Alex Dakers

13mins: Three touches and two shots on target for Alexander Isak so far tonight.

Liverpool finding a foothold in this game a little bit more now after a ropey opening few minutes.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:11 , Alex Dakers

10mins: Szboszlai takes it and Virgil van Dijk jumps for it, but Frankfurt manage to boot it away.

Two Frankfurt players have stayed down in the box and the referee halts play. An elbow to the head for one, it looks like.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:10 , Alex Dakers

9mins: On Liverpool’s next attack, Cody Gakpo lays it off to the right for Alexander Isak but Zetterer gets down well to push the ball - coming in from a relatively tough angle - away.

Liverpool corner.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:09 , Alex Dakers

8mins: Alexander Isak then finds himself through against Michael Zetterer and tries to lift the ball over the Frankfurt goalkeeper, but hits him instead and the Germans scramble it clear.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:08 , Alex Dakers

7mins: A first clear-cut chance of the match for Eintracht Frankfurt as Jean-Matteo Bahoya forces Giorgi Mamardashvili into a good save.

The linesman raises his flag for offside, although upon review it doesn’t look like it was.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:05 , Alex Dakers

5mins: Frankfurt wanted a free-kick but the referee waves play on and Liverpool take the ball up the other end.

The Reds lose it, though, before briefly winning it back again.

A bit of nervy start for Arne Slot’s side, who are struggling to break out of their own half for any great length of time.

Upwards of 80% possession for the hosts so far.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:03 , Alex Dakers

3mins: Jones and Szoboszlai seem to be the two holding midfielders today with Gravenberch out and Mac Allister benched, with Wirtz lining up centrally ahead of them.

Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike are the Liverpool front three today in Mo Salah’s absence.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Liverpool

20:01 , Alex Dakers

1mins: Frankfurt come flying out of the blocks and force Virgil van Dijk to knock the ball behind for a corner.

It’s taken short before being thumped in, but Ibrahima Konate clears with a header.

Frankfurt plan to hit Liverpool in 'transition' - but bench biggest goal threats

19:44 , Alex Dakers

Dino Toppmöller has discussed his decision to make a few noteworthy changes to his starting line-up, including benching in-form frontman Jonathan Burkardt

“We have games every two to three days and in this game Liverpool will have the ball, that’s easy to know,” the Frankfurt boss said.

“We will try to get our chances with a transition game.”

“We need to have good transition moments to attack the goal and bring the crowd into the game. That is the task for today.”

(Getty Images)

Burkardt, 25, has three goals in this season’s Champions League already, while attacking midfielder Can Uzun - also named on the bench tonight - has five in the Bundesliga.

Salah benching - expected or not?

19:38 , Alex Dakers

One man who did see Mohamed Salah’s benching coming was Jamie Carragher, who said the Egyptian star should no longer be an automatic starter for Liverpool.

Salah played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win last season and scooped many individual awards, including the PFA Player of the Year award for a record third time in the process.

However, the Egypt international has endured a slow start to the campaign despite registering six goal involvements in 10 games across all competitions.

Salah endured another frustrating afternoon as Liverpool were beaten 2-1 at home by Manchester United on Sunday, misssing a couple of guilt-edged chances before being substituted as the Reds chased an equaliser.

Such has been the drop off from the 33-year-old, Carragher believes Arne Slot needs to build the team around big-money summer signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.

(CBS Sports)

“It has to be Isak and Wirtz because of the money spent on them and because of the age profile compared to Mo Salah,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I do think watching Mo Salah this season, I absolutely love him, but there’s a tactical set-up with Mo Salah in that he doesn’t help Liverpool’s right-back.”

Frankfurt changes: Four swaps, Gotze starts

19:14 , Alex Dakers

Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, have made four changes for tonight’s match compared to their most recent league outing, a 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg on Sunday.

Head coach Dino Toppmöller has elected to change his goalkeepers, as Michael Zetterer comes in for Kaua Santos.

Fares Chaibi drops out of midfield, as does Can Uzun, with Jean-Matteo Bahoya and Ansgar Knauff coming into the XI, while Jonathan Burkardt - who scored both of his team’s goals against Freiburg - is replaced by 33-year-old Mario Gotze, scorer of that 2014 World Cup Final-winning goal.

Salah benched in two straight UCL games for first time

19:07 , Alex Dakers

Having failed to make the starting XI tonight, this marks the first time Mohamed Salah has been benched in two consecutive Champions League matches since his arrival at Liverpool in 2017.

Is he just due a rest, or is this a sign of things to come for a player who has been the Reds’ key man on so many occasions?

He’s one of the Premier League’s - and Liverpool’s - greatest ever stars, but Father Time waits for no one.

Liverpool changes: Slot makes five tweaks as Salah benched

19:04 , Alex Dakers

Hugo Ekitike does indeed start against his former club tonight, as one of five changes to the starting XI that lined up against Manchester United on Sunday.

Joining the former Frankfurt forward among those to have benefitted from the tweaks by Arne Slot are Jeremie Frimpong, Andy Robertson, Florian Wirtz and Curtis Jones.

Ryan Gravenberch is one of those to make way, having been ruled out through injury, with midfield partner Alexis Mac Allister another; the Argentine took a knock to the head in the loss to United but has made the bench here.

Conor Bradley must also settle for a place among the substitutes. The same is true of Milos Kerkez and... Mohamed Salah!

Ekitike to start on return to Frankfurt?

18:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Hugo Ekitike is one of Liverpool’s various big-money summer signings, and, just a couple months after jumping ship, he already faces the prospect of playing against his former club.

Slot has hinted he could be in for a start.

"It's always special for every player if you go to one of your former clubs, especially if you did really well,” he said.

“In [Ekitike’s] situation, he did so well that I think not only he likes to go back over there, I think the fans over there like to see him as well for what he did for the club, because he was part of the team that brought them to the Champions League. Special for him.

Will Alexander Isak start up front again, or will it be Hugo Ekitike tonight against his former club? (Getty Images)

Slot continued, adding that the match would also serve as a homecoming of sorts for Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong: “Special for Florian [Wirtz] as well to go back to Germany and play there. Special for Jeremie Frimpong because he was also, like Florian and like Hugo, so successful in Germany. For the three of them, it's nice to play in Germany again.”

No Gravenberch?

18:30 , Arthur Ferridge

Plenty has been made of the various tweaks people expect Arne Slot to make tonight, but one decision has been made for him as Ryan Gravenberch misses out through injury.

He did not make the plane to Germany, and will watch on from his home on Merseyside.

Slot hopes he will return in time for this weekend’s visit to Brentford.

Standard Sport prediction

18:10 , Arthur Ferridge

Liverpool were perhaps unlucky to lose to Manchester United last time out - Cody Gakpo alone racking up more xG than most Premier League teams over the weekend - but their defence continues to ship goals for fun.

Defence will play a huge part, with Frankfurt far from rock solid at the back themselves. Expect a fairly cautious game with few goals.

Liverpool to win, 2-1.

Eintracht Frankfurt early team news

Frankfurt will likely keep faith with centre-back pairing Robin Koch and Arthur Theate, despite less-than-warm notices for their performances this season.

Teenager Can Uzun should start after scoring six goals in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Liverpool early team news

For Liverpool, Hugo Ekitike will hope to face his former side after losing his starting spot to Alexander Isak. There is also likely to be changes in midfield and defence, with Alexis Mac Allister struggling to impress.

Andy Robertson is expected to come in for Milos Kerkez at left-back and Joe Gomez could replace Ibrahima Konate to his right.

Ryan Gravenberch has not travelled with the squad.
