Eight of the most romantic Scottish places for an autumn wander

Other than the month of February – thanks to St Valentine – there are few more romantic times of the year in Scotland than Autumn. With the colours changing with the seasons and the nights drawing in, it's the ideal time to get close to a partner.

Particularly, the cooler weather is the ideal excuse to coorie in for a cuddle or two while out for a romantic stroll.

Add to that a drink together in a cosy pub, or even a candle-lit dinner in a wonderful restaurant and you have all the ingredients for a wonderful date day out.

Thankfully, with its stunning scenery, beautiful lochs and vibrant food and drinks scene, Scotland has more than a few delightful (and romantic) places to visit with the one you love.

What better way to show your partner how you feel than by treating them to a day out to one of these fantastic locations this autumn.

Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway

One of the most underrated parts of the country, Dumfries and Galloway has plenty of idyllic towns to explore but it's the star-filled skies that you'll find above it that will really leave you with a magical feeling.

Europe's very first Dark Sky Town, Moffat, is the best place to head to enjoy a stay beneath these wonderful clear night skies.

Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags, Edinburgh

Edinburgh is romantic in itself, but head out for a wee stroll together on this exciting walk at the end of the Royal Mile.

Wrap up warm, it can get cold at the top, and take on a short hike to the top where you will be rewarded with stunning views of this historic city.

Seamill Beach, Ayrshire

Seamill beach lies just north of the better-known one at Ardrossan and stretches along the coast at West Kilbride, beside the popular Waterside and Seamill Hydro hotels.

With long stretches of sand and plenty of rock pools when the tide is out, it really comes into its own on a crisp day when the sun goes down and the light plays over water and the striking pudding shape of the Ailsa Craig.

A wee cruise on Loch Lomond

Surrounded by truly breathtaking scenery, there are few more memorable trips than a cruise on Loch Lomond.

Hit the water to get a unique view of this world-famous loch, before heading to villages like Luss or Balmaha to enjoy a tasty lunch together.

Glenfinnan Viaduct, Highlands

If your significant other is a Harry Potter fan, they'll love a trip to this iconic viaduct which was made famous by the boy wizard movies.

Jump on the Jacobite Steam Train to live out the Hogwarts Express fantasy or just enjoy the world-beating scenery you'll find all around this stunning region.

Mountain Gondola, Nevis Range

Snuggle up together and enjoy the views on offer as you head to the top of the Nevis range.

A beautiful ride year-round, it really comes into its own when the seasons change and colours switch from green to reds, golds and orange.

SS Sir Walter Scott on Loch Katrine

Take a gentle romantic trip down Loch Katrine, with its magnificent landscapes shaped by nature and immortalised in poetry by Sir Walter Scott

Spot the Northern Lights, Caithness

Head to the far north of the country to enjoy the sight that everyone has on their bucket list.

The Northern Lights, or the Mirrie Dancers as they are known in Scotland, can be seen at this time of year, though be sure to use apps like Aurora Watch UK to make sure you go when they are active.

The Falls of Bruar, Perthshire

There are few more romantic sights than the tumbling waters of a waterfall and the Falls of Bruar even captured the imagination of Scotland's favourite Bard, Rabbie Burns.

Park up at the House of Bruar and enjoy a romantic woodland walk on the way to the falls.
