Egypt is advancing at a rapid pace towards sustainable transport, relying on the reform plan adopted by the government since it launched its Economic Reform Program in 2015.

In addition to the high-speed electric train line linking Egypt’s eastern and northern coasts and the decision to replace old trains with new ones, the country has recently taken a decisions to replace obsolete vehicles and convert cars to run with natural gas.

It aims to improve the quality of life for citizens and their means of transportation while enhancing the auto industry by encouraging the use of natural gas, which saves about 50 percent of the cost of traditional fuel.

In January, Egypt signed MoUs with a Chinese company to produce the first electric cars in the country.

On Monday, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait issued a decision on new facilities dedicated to calculating customs tax for cars that operate with an electric motor or motors running on electricity and fuel.

This decision comes in line with the state’s efforts to expand the use of electric vehicles, especially since Egypt is a promising market for the transportation industry.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources officially launched an application that allows users to identify the location of natural gas stations.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla highlighted on Monday the state’s efforts to extend natural gas networks throughout the country.
