EFL release fixtures statement as Everton and Liverpool await Premier League decision

The EFL have confirmed their midweek round of fixtures this week will resume - as Everton and Liverpool wait to hear whether they will return to Premier League action.

English football was postponed at the weekend as a mark of respect following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Liverpool were due to host Wolves on Saturday while Everton were scheduled to travel to Arsenal on Sunday.

There is further concern of a second weekend of postponements given the upcoming state funeral. And a new report from The Times has suggested 'the strain on police resources before and during the Queen’s funeral may lead to postponements in the Premier League this weekend'.

It was also reported that the government will meet with all major sporting bodies this morning (Monday, September 12) with the intention to encourage fixtures to go ahead under police advice and ‘wherever possible.’ On Sunday, Liverpool are due to travel to Chelsea while Everton are scheduled to host West Ham United.

Before then, though, there is a round of midweek fixtures in the Football League. The governing body have confirmed that all matches will go ahead, and have outlined the tributes that will be paid to the Monarch at all stadiums.

“The EFL fixture programme will return as scheduled from Tuesday 13 September, with tributes to be paid to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at grounds around the country,” the statement read.

“A minute’s silence will be held before matches, with black armbands to be worn by participants, flags to be flown at half-mast and the National Anthem to be played in stadiums.

“With a national policing plan now in operation, the League and Clubs will continue to work with forces in respect of any challenges that may emerge regarding policing of specific fixtures.

“Consideration to individual circumstances will be made on a case-by-case basis, in line with standard match Safety Advisory Group (SAG) protocols.”
