Efe Ambrose transfer latest as St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright speaks out on defensive issues

Efe Ambrose would have to be ready to hit the ground running if St Johnstone were to move for the former Celtic defender, says Tommy Wright .

Ambrose is still without a club having left Derby County in the summer without having played a match for the Championship side.

The 31-year-old defender was this week linked with a return to Hibs where he spent two years and who he helped win the Championship title two season ago.

But Saints have also been quoted as having an interest and, while giving little away, boss Tommy Wright didn't rule out a move for the Nigeria international.

“I said we would be looking at experienced defenders to add to the squad so it’s no surprise that we are linked with people," Wright said.

“If you bring someone else in they have to be fit because there is no point bringing someone in and it taking them a few weeks to get fit.

“So if someone was coming in, then they’d have to be ready to go within seven to 10 days.”

Saints have been without central defender Liam Gordon since he suffered a knee injury in training at the start of October.

But the 23-year-old could return ahead of schedule for the clash with Motherwell a week on Saturday.

Wright added: "“Liam has been doing a fair bit of work and we are hoping to have him back in full training by the middle of the week."
