Edinson Cavani's mother defends PSG star over Manchester United transfer links

Edinson Cavani's mother has backed up claims by his agent that he could have joined Manchester United in the January transfer window.

United were interested in signing a new forward last month and eventually agreed a loan move to secure the services of Odion Ighalo on deadline day.

MEN Sport reported last month Paris Saint-Germain wanted a fee close to £25million for the Uruguayan, whose contract expires in the summer, meaning a loan exit was always highly unlikely.

The 32-year-old then nearly made a move to Atletico Madrid but ended up staying at the French club and his agent Walter Guglielmone and mother have been defending the decision.

Berta Gómez told AS: “Edinson did not want money to be a problem, because if it had been for money he would have gone to Manchester United, Chelsea or Inter Miami (David Beckham Club), who made an important offer for him.

“Let no one forget that my son has an impeccable career, he is a complete professional, and that the pressure he put on PSG with not playing to go out to Atletico is a stain on his career.”

United considered a large number of forwards to ease the burden on Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood while Marcus Rashford is sidelined with an injury before securing former Watford striker Ighalo on a last minute loan deal until the end of the season.

The Nigerian arrived in Manchester on Sunday morning and will link up with his new teammates during their warm weather training camp next week.
