Edinson Cavani faces FA probe over social media post after Manchester United win vs Southampton

The Football Association is investigating a social media post by Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani after his performance in their win at Southampton.

It has been confirmed that the FA is looking into a message sent by Cavani to a follower on Instagram that used a term in Spanish, which could be deemed discriminatory or racist language.

It is understood that Cavani used the phrase in an affectionate manner, as it is often used in his native Uruguay, in response to a follower who was congratulating him on his two goals for United at St Mary's.

But reports claim he could face a three-match ban, despite deleting the post once its potentially offensive nature was made clear to him.

FA Rule E3 dictates that any social media message that includes a reference to a person’s ethnic origin, colour, race or nationality, then that will be regarded as a potential aggravating factor in any punishment. The owners of social media accounts are responsible for anything posted from that account, whether by themselves or by a third party.

United have not made an official statement but it is understood they are aware of the post.
