Edinburgh woman left fuming as fly tippers caught on camera outside her home

An Edinburgh woman was left fuming after two men dumped building materials in a communal bin on her capital street.

Lorraine Devanney, from Dalry, was leaving her home on Murieston Road when she spotted the two men getting out of a white van and dumping their rubbish outside of her house.

Posting photo online, Lorraine wrote: "Two guys in this van dumping building materials in communal bin, when I asked them to stop they didn't understand what I was saying..

"However when I took their registration they understood, stopped dumping and took off."

Other residents of the street left comments on their posts with their concerns of fly-tipping, with one writing: "I reported fly tipping of builder's waste into the communal bin the other week, included photos of the act of tipping, the van and driver, plus registration.

"Unfortunately, it seems like the bin was emptied on the routine collection, so couldn't be checked, as I've heard nothing since."

Another Facebook user said: "Thanks you. Hopefully the Council and Police can do more than just collect the flytipped items."

Another user joked: "Such a pity. I really wonder if anyone cares!"

A reply to this comment read: "I don't think so but if they have the reg number of the van etc why is the council not giving them a fine."

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Lorraine said: "This road I live on and the bin outside my front window is constantly overflowing and used be many fly tippers and trade waste

"One local shop in particular fills the bin with their packaging."

"I did go to that shop, with photographic evidence and warned them that I would report them if it continues, they stopped for a while, but still dump waste to this day.

"The bin outside my window is too accessible to many people, and therefore used as a dump site, I've had anything from beds to cookers dumped directly outside my window.

"I used to get depressed, become anxious and sad about this, I have reported rats seen at the bins, I know this, as my cats react when watching rats from my window.

"I now see this as an ongoing challenge which I fight almost daily, rather than let it make me ill."

On the City of Edinburgh Council website, incidents of fly-tipping should be reported online on their website, as dumping anything from "bin bag next to a bin to a mattress or garden waste" is illegal.
