Edinburgh lightning map: see where it struck the capital in 'once-in-a-lifetime' thunderstorm

Thousands of homes have been left without internet, car parks flooded en masse and train travel was disrupted as a fearsome 'once-in-a-lifetime' thunderstorm lit up the skies above Edinburgh last night.

Amongst an almost constant and deafening rumble of thunder, Edinburgh locals said that they had "never seen anything like it", with one person adding that their street had "became a river".

Now you can see an incredible map of where lightning struck the capital last night as the sky lit up every few seconds.

Lightningmaps.org allows users to see exactly where lightning struck yesterday evening - including Princes Street!

The chaos after the storm continues as 100,000 residents in and around Edinburgh have been left without internet for hours after the service was knocked out. A number of flights to Edinburgh were diverted to Glasgow as well last night due to the lightning storm.

A yellow Met Office  weather  warning remains in place, with a more serious amber warning for much of Edinburgh and the Lothians, with significant disruption expected for most of today.

The Scottish  Environment  Protection Agency (SEPA) has 17 flood alerts remain current across Scotland.

"The greatest risk is during Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. Flooding of properties, parts of communities and disruption to  travel  and infrastructure are possible from surface water and rivers," SEPA said.
