Edinburgh weather: Huge thunderstorm to batter Lothians tonight with flash flood warning issued

A flood alert has been issued for Edinburgh and Lothians amid warnings that a huge thunderstorm could hit the area this evening.

Heavy showers this afternoon (Saturday 3 July) and Sunday could cause flooding impacts from surface water, warns SEPA who issued the yellow flood warning this morning.

They added that: "Particularly at risk are urban areas and the transport network. Due to the localised nature of the showers, impacts may be isolated, with not all locations being affected.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property."

The central belt will see scattered showers and temperatures of up to 18C, providing the perfect combination for thunderstorms to occur and the Met Office has forecast heavy rainfall, thunder and lightning to hit the country from today.

Tomorrow's forecast for Edinburgh and the Lothians from the Met Office reads: "A cloudy start. Brightening up through the morning with some sunny spells and some heavy showers by the afternoon."

Unfortunately it doesn't look to get any better next week, with the extended forecast for Monday through to Wednesday reading: "Unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy and perhaps thundery at times. Still feeling warm in any sunshine with mainly light winds."
