Edinburgh weather: Forth Road Bridge closes to double-decker buses due to strong gales

The Forth Road Bridge has been shut to double-decker buses this morning due to strong gales of over 40mph.

Transport Scotland reported the bridge had been closed to double-decker buses shortly before 7am this morning (15 January).

If the wind speed reaches 50 mph the bridge will also close to motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians.

Meanwhile, Queensferry Crossing is operating as normal and would not close to all vehicles unless gusts reached up to 70 mph.

However, M90 traffic is "very slow" on approach to the crossing this morning with commuters facing around a 15-minute wait.

There were weather warnings and flood alerts in place on Monday as Storm Brendan hit Edinburgh and the Lothians.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said that it was one of the few times a storm can accurately be called  a "weather bomb."

Strong winds even saw a tree blow over and block a road in Balerno during rush-hour on Tuesday.

While the weather is set to take brighter turn today with sunny spells, there will still be strong gusts across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

The Met Office says: "Mainly dry with sunny spells and just a few showers, perhaps longer spells of rain through the more northern Lothians this afternoon.

"Feeling cold with fresh or strong west to southwesterly winds, locally gale force across the Lothians and Borders. Maximum temperature 7 °C."
