Edinburgh weather: Exact time thunder storms will hit the capital today

A Met Office yellow weather warning is in place in Edinburgh throughout today.

Weather experts are predicting heavy showers and thunder storms that could lead to flooding and disruption.

The warning came into force at 10am this morning and will last until 11:59pm tonight.

The BBC weather forecast says that the thunder storms will start at 4pm this afternoon and will last well into the night, until 2am.

The Met and BBC both predict that a few days of rain will follow after today’s storms, but the good news for people in Edinburgh is it won’t last and the good weather will return.

The BBC 14-day forecast shows that the dry weather will come back after Wednesday, with temperatures expected to hover around the 20° mark and above during July.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out from late morning on Sunday, perhaps becoming quite widespread during the afternoon.

“Some places will miss the worst of these, but where they do occur, 20 to 30 mm rain could fall in a short space of time leading to some surface water flooding.

“Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will only slowly ease during the evening and some could persist well into the night.”

They added: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.”

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

Under a yellow warning the weather will cause some low level impacts, including some disruption to travel in a few places.

Most people will be able to continue with their daily routine, but there will be some that will be directly impacted and so it is important to assess journeys beforehand.
