Edinburgh weather could see threat of thunderstorms as heavy rain to hit the capital

Edinburgh could be set for a spell of wet weather next week, with periods of heavy downfall and a threat of thunderstorms.

After a fairly dry spell to round off the summer, as the nights start to close in and darkness creeps up on us, the weather is also set to taker a turn for the worst in true Scottish fashion.

According to the Met Office, the start of the week will see dry conditions, although the outlook to midweek brings the possibility of thunderstorms and 'heavy rain'.

The forecast for Sunday reads: "Remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of heavy rain, and a risk of thunderstorms, easing from the afternoon. There will be some spells of warm sunshine. Maximum temperature 21 °C."

While looking further towards midweek, the Met Office says that Edinburgh, the Lothians and Borders can expect heavy downpour. They added: "remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of heavy rain, and a risk of thunderstorms. There will be some spells of warm sunshine, especially on Tuesday.

In amongst the potential rainy conditions, the forecast does also show some bright and sunny spells throughout the week. In terms of temperatures, highs of 20C could be reached on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with the sun breaking free from the clouds on Wednesday into the back end of the week.

Other parts of Scotland have also had a weather warning in place due to potential flood conditions drifting over from Wales.

Clear skies may be difficult to spot in and around Edinburgh, with white clouds being replaced by grey ones throughout the week as summer slowly draws to a close.
