Edinburgh walkers rescued after getting stuck on Pentland Hills due to snowdrift

Hero rescuers were called out to save walkers after they became stranded in Edinburgh's Pentland Hills over the weekend.

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue came to the aid of two people who become stuck on the hills last night, at around 8:30pm.

While the beauty spot has been popular with walkers over lockdown, emergency services faced serious challenges when trying to reach the walkers.

The rescue team revealed they were unable to get past deep snowdrifts in their Landrover and were forced to call in the Scottish Ambulance Service's "wolverine" vehicle to deal with the difficult conditions.

Taking to social media, they said: "At 20:32 this evening we were requested by Police Scotland to assist with the evacuation of two walkers in the North Pentland hills near Edinburgh.

"Although no snow was present in the Colinton/Bonaly areas of the city, it quickly became apparent that our vehicle couldn't progress through the deep snowdrifts as we tried to access to Bonaly Reservoir - luckily the Scottish Ambulance Service 'Wolverine' vehicle was able to get further than our Landrover which greatly assisted the rescue effort.

The rescue team, which is a charity and has to raise most of its funds, urged people to take care in planning journeys before heading into the Pentlands.

"At the moment virtually all the hills in our patch remain covered in snow with some very deep drifts - this makes walking very slow and difficult. Please plan your journey and make sure what you are attempting is achievable."

It comes as Storm Darcy is set to batter the capital with heavy winds and snow.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Cold air, along with snow showers to low levels pushing inland from the North Sea, is expected to spread south during the weekend. Not all locations will see snow, with the showers likely to miss some places altogether.

"In addition to the showers, there is a potential that an extended period of more persistent snowfall could impact parts of the East Midlands overnight Saturday and through Sunday."
