Edinburgh to London flight 'declares mid-air emergency' just moments after take off

An Edinburgh flight which left for London reportedly declared a mid-air emergency just 25 minutes after taking off.

The British Airways flight departed the capital airport at around 7.15am on Sunday morning.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 appeared to show the flight leaving the airport at around that time before circling around the area to return to Edinburgh once again.

The flight landed back at the airport at around 8am.

British Airways have confirmed that the BA2507 returned to the airport as a precaution amid a minor technical issue.

A passenger on board the flight claimed that it was due to landing gear failing to retract after take off.

Stephen Jackson tweeted: "Great customer service after cancelled BA2507 from Edinburgh.

"Landing gear didn't retract landed back in Edinburgh I was rebooked on a later flight with 20min via text and boarding passes all ready."

A spokesperson for BA said: "Our highly trained pilots made the decision to return to Edinburgh as a precaution, following a minor technical issue.

"Our teams are looking after our customers and working to get them on their way as soon as possible."

An eyewitness told the Daily Record that he saw a 'number of emergency services' race to the scene.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We were alerted to a plane that hadn't landed, but we were stood down from the scene at around 7.55am.

"We believe the plane has now landed."

Police Scotland have described the incident as 'routine' for its officers.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers were called to Edinburgh Airport at around 7.30am to assist with a routine incident.

"We were stood down at 7.50am."
