Edinburgh schoolboys assaulted by balaclava-wearing gang after being asked for money

Two Edinburgh schoolboys were left shaken after being the subject of an assault and attempted robbery on Sunday evening.

The two boys, aged 13, were walking along Ferry Road and were approached by a group of older youths, aged between 14 and 16-years old on South Trinity Road at 7:40pm.

One of the young boys were asked to hand over money and then was assaulted when he tried to run away.

There was believed to be around 12 youths involved in the attempted robbery, with officers now keen to trace and speak to as many of them as possible.

The majority of the group were wearing dark-coloured tracksuits, facemasks and balaclavas. One of them is described as of Asian appearance, around 5ft and wearing a distinctive pink headband and black gloves.

Detective Constable Will Doughty said: "Fortunately the boy assaulted did not require medical treatment but was left frightened by what happened. We have a description of one of the assailants and we would like to speak to all of those involved as part of our enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

"If you can assist then please contact us on 101, quoting incident number 2640 of Sunday, 2 January, 2022, or make a call anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111."
