Edinburgh school to close over flood damage as emergency works carried out

An Edinburgh school will be closed to pupils on Monday (August 23) after extensive water damage affected the building.

Wester Hailes Education Centre have informed parents that the site will be closed as well as the swimming pool facilities while emergency works are carried out.

The school had only recently opened this week after the summer break, however flooding damage is reported to have impacted the roof as well as several classrooms.

At present, the council have confirmed that the school is only expected to be closed on Monday, however parents will be informed of any delays encountered.

The school building had already been undergoing serious construction work, with headteacher David Young reporting that contractors are due to be on-site for another 44 weeks.

On August 16, the school had stated that a risk assessment had been carried out to ensure it was safe to return.

However, on Sunday parents were informed of the temporary closure, which will also affect out-of hours swimming lessons, reports the Edinburgh Evening News.

A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said: “Wester Hailes High School and Leisure Centre will be closed on Monday 23 August following extensive water damage over the weekend.

"Parents and carers will be contacted directly by the Head Teacher and kept informed of progress.”
