Edinburgh school tells senior pupils 'stay home' after major Covid outbreak

Senior pupils at a specialist Edinburgh high school have been ordered to remain at home for an indefinite period as the institution wrestles with a coronavirus outbreak among students.

Parents claim Kaimes School in Liberton has suffered repeated issues with transmission of the disease since pupils returned to in-person learning earlier this year.

Youngsters returned to lessons in August after Scotland moved beyond level zero of the Government’s coronavirus roadmap, sparking a huge uptick in cases.

That number has fallen in recent months with the rollout of initial vaccine doses for teenagers, however some have continued to experience outbreak clusters.

Bosses at the school, which caters for youngsters on the autism spectrum, have since taken precautionary measures to protect the health of students and teachers by requesting older pupils learn from home until rates fall.

No date has yet been provided for a slated return to classrooms, but council chiefs have warned that will not come until ‘pupil/staffing ratios can be maintained’.

One parent told Edinburgh Live transmission among the student population had been "an ongoing problem since term began".

A spokesperson for City of Edinburgh Council said: “We continue to support our schools by following the national guidance to ensure learning and teaching can continue and our young people receive the education they need, however on occasion there is a need for pupils to stay at home to ensure safe opening, in line with staffing ratios.”

She added: “We are working hard to address these staffing issues and look forward to welcoming pupils back as soon as possible.”
