Edinburgh's Lothian buses stop services again after bus drivers attacked with stones

Lothian bus drivers were once again 'attacked' by youths last night resulting in the travel operator diverting buses away from Broomhouse Road.

At around 9.30pm yesterday evening, the number 12 and 21 buses had to be diverted after reports of youths throwing stones at vehicles, according to the police.

Edinburgh Councillor Mark Brown hit out at the shocking behaviour, tweeting out: "Unbelievable. More anti-social behaviour this evening forcing @on_lothianbuses to re-direct buses in the capital."

Lothian bus drivers have now been harassed by youths a number of times over the last couple of weeks with the situation getting so bad that they had to withdraw all services on Wednesday evening after bricks and rocks were launched at them while serving key workers at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary.

Police have been carrying out proactive patrols around Edinburgh, including in the south east of the city, and say they've spoken to more than 100 young people about the dangers associated with throwing objects at buses.

Lyn Turner, Unite Regional Industrial Officer, told Edinburgh Live he fears it's only a matter of time before we see a very serious incident, or a fatality, as a result of these reckless actions.

He said: "Bus drivers are turning up for work every day and running an essential service during the pandemic.

"That they are facing such attacks is absolutely disgraceful. We're one step away from a very serious injury or even a fatality. It's that serious. Drivers are frightened going to their work.

"The police are out doing patrols, but I do think communities can play a role in stopping these things from happening too."

Commenting on last night's incidents, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the Sighthill Park area of Edinburgh at around 9.30pm on Saturday, 20 March following reports of youths throwing stones at vehicles.

“The youths were dispersed and enquiries are continuing.”
