Edinburgh pupils in 1962 asked about being new TV generation in unearthed footage

Historic footage that shows the famous Bill Tennent at a primary school in the north of Edinburgh in 1962 has once again resurfaced.

Tennent appears as the anchor of ‘Here and Now,’ a current affairs show that tackled various stories in Scotland whilst also showcasing up and coming artists such as Billy Connoly on STV. The video shows the presenter in 1962 before a class of young pupils before it jumps to 1987, where he was reunited with the same pupils on the site of the old school.

The purpose of the episode was to speak to children born in 1957 who were considered the ‘new TV generation’ - the first group to grow up with commercial TV. Nervous kids were asked questions by Tennent regarding the television that they watched at home.

The charismatic TV star teased one boy George Brawley by calling him Georgey Porgy before speaking to a young girl, June Rafferty, who said that she had learned the Twist after watching a man do the dance move on the television.

June reminisced about the meeting and informed Tennent that her children were obsessed with Rainbow and Tickle on the Tum in 1987 - two shows that she recorded for them to watch over and over again.

Back in 1962 Tommy Nugent was asked what team he supported and replied that he was a Jambo. Whilst speaking to Tennent 25 years on, Tommy said that he still watched Hearts whenever he could get away from his Saturday football - something that a lot of young fans can relate to today.

An unnamed child was heard saying that his favourite thing to watch on the tele was “Cowboys.” The answer was a throwback to an era that saw Western’s broadcast as a regular occurrence.
