Edinburgh prison staff 'sacked for attacking inmate in his cell'

Three prison officers in Edinburgh have reportedly been sacked for attacking an inmate.

The incident is understood to have occurred at HMP Edinburgh, Saughton, after the trio battered the 24-year-old prison in his cell in early September 22.

The Record reports how the three officers are physical training instructors at the prison and were axed from their roles last week. The officers are responsible for delivering physical education programmes and activities for lags.

The extent of the convict's injuries are not yet known, nor is the crime he is serving time for. Police Scotland have launched a probe into the attack.

A spokesperson for the force said: "On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, police received a report of a 24-year-old man assaulted at HMP Edinburgh on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Enquiries are continuing."

The Scottish Prison Service declined to comment on the incident but insisted any violence within their institutions is "completely unacceptable".

A spokesperson said: "As this matter is in the hands of Police Scotland, it would be inappropriate to comment. We expect the highest standards of behaviour from all our staff.

"Where standards fall short, we have procedures in place to address matters. Any act of violence is completely unacceptable and all allegations are reported to Police Scotland for independent investigation."
