Edinburgh Princes Street shut by police as body found

PART of Edinburgh city centre has been closed by police after a body was discovered.

Forensic officers and a blue forensics tent were seen on a section of the pavement on Princes Street on Wednesday morning.

Police Scotland first received a report of an unresponsive man at around 6am on Wednesday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6am on Wednesday, 25 June, we received a report of an unresponsive man on Princes Street in Edinburgh.

“Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

Princes Street has been shut westbound to all traffic from the junction of Hanover Street to South St David Street, with a police cordon in place.

A Scottish Ambulance Service vehicle and two Police Scotland cars were seen in attendance.

Commuters were advised about disruption on buses and trams.

Lothian Buses said: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve part of Princes Street and are instead diverted via Frederick Street, George Street and South St David Street eastbound until further notice.”

Edinburgh Trams said: “Due to a police incident, Princes Street is closed. We are part route between West End and Edinburgh Airport in both directions. Ticket acceptance is in place with Lothian Buses.”
