Edinburgh police scrambled to woman riding mobility scooter on busy bypass

A woman was stopped by police after riding a mobility scooter on a busy Edinburgh bypass on Tuesday afternoon, May 10.

Officers were alerted by concerned passers-by after the 72-year-old female was seen riding her scooter on the A1 between Dunbar and Haddington, East Lothian, reportedly on the wrong side of the road.

The alarm was raised by passers-by and several locals posted on social media to inform others of the incident, with people dialling 999 when they became aware of the potentially dangerous situation.

The bypass is one of the main routes into the capital and is usually packed with vehicles travelling at up to 70mph.

Thankfully, owing to the work of the emergency services, and those who alerted them, the woman was rescued by officers and taken back home to her family.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed the woman was tracked down and spoken to about the potential consequences of her actions.

They added: "Around 3.45pm on Tuesday, 10 May, 2022, officers responded to a concern for person call after motorists contacted police to report a 72-year-old woman, was on a mobility scooter on the A1 near Haddington. Officers attended and the lady was removed from the road and provided with advice and assistance".

Several people took to social media in absolute shock at what they had witnessed, whilst also trying to make the woman's family aware of the incident.

Other reports suggest not only the police, but other concerned passers-by stopped on the hard shoulder to stop the woman.

Officers confirmed that the woman was left in the safe hands of her family after the terrifying ordeal.
