Edinburgh M8 restricted after multi-vehicle smash as tailbacks start to form

A busy Edinburgh road is currently restricted due to a multi-vehicle smash as motorists have been warned of delays.

One lane of the M8 at Hermiston Gait is currently blocked following reports of a two-vehicle smash on the eastbound carriageway on the outskirts of the capital.

The incident occurred around 1pm on Saturday, April 8, as police are understood to be at the scene. Taking to Twitter to warn fellow drivers, one user said: "Be aware two-car RTC lane two of two on approach to Hermiston Gait, e/b from M8."

Traffic Scotland confirmed reports of a collision as they added: "NEW: 13:15 M8 Collision M8 eastbound junction two -junction one at Hermiston Gait. Approach with care, traffic is building in the area."

Images from a nearby traffic camera show queues building in the area as traffic is heavier than usual due to Easter Weekend celebrations.

On Friday, we reported how mile-long queues were spotted on-route to the M90 Queensferry Crossing ahead of a Easter getaway weekend. One motorist took to Twitter and said: "Currently stuck in this congestion! Having the Forth Road Bridge open to regular traffic would clearly help! Absolute joke!"

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.10pm on Saturday, 8 April, 2023, we were called to a report of a two-car crash on the M8 eastbound near Junction 1.

"There are no reports of any injuries."
