Edinburgh LNER passengers issued urgent travel warning as major cancellations announced

Edinburgh LNER passengers have been issued a travel warning ahead of strike action.

Members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport workers (RMT) and ASLEF are staging a massive walkout with 40,000 staff taking part, including Network Rail employees and staff from a number train operators. ASLEF union members

A number of strike days have been announced and LNER have announced that all of their trains to and from Edinburgh have been cancelled on Saturday October 1.

Taking to Twitter, LNER said: "There will be a limited LNER service tomorrow (October 1) due to engineering works taking place in Newcastle as well as industrial action. We are advising customers do not travel to/from stations north of York."

The firm later added: "Due to a shortage of train crew, the 2:00pm Kings Cross to Aberdeen due 9:13pm will be terminated at Edinburgh. Rail replacement coaches have been arranged for onward travel; please follow directions from station staff."

This comes as a number of strike action has been announced for October.

Train strikes in October

  • RMT Network Rail Strike on October 1 and 8
  • RMT ScotRail strike on October 10
  • ASLEF on October 1 and 5

ScotRail stresses that its services will not be impacted by ASLEF's strike action. It said: "ScotRail services will not be directly impacted by planned strike action by train driver’s union ASLEF as this dispute does not involve any ScotRail train drivers.

"However, the strike on October 1 will take place on the same day RMT members of Network Rail are planning industrial action. Therefore, ScotRail services will be disrupted on October 1."

Rail operators affected by strikes

A number of rail operators will be affected by the strike action. Train drivers who are members of the Aslef union and employees represented by RMT and TSSA will all walk out on Saturday October 1.

While ScotRail are not associated by this strike action, trains will still come to a stand still across Scotland as Network Rail staff will not be available,.

The Aslef action will affect the following 12 rail operators:

  • Avanti West Coast
  • Chiltern Railways
  • CrossCountry
  • Greater Anglia
  • Great Western Railway
  • Hull Trains
  • LNER
  • London Overground
  • Northern Trains
  • Southeastern
  • TransPennine Express
  • West Midlands Trains

The RMT action will affect Network Rail and 14 train companies:

  • Chiltern Railways
  • Cross Country Trains
  • Greater Anglia
  • LNER
  • East Midlands Railway
  • c2c
  • Great Western Railway
  • Northern Trains
  • South Eastern
  • South Western Railway
  • Transpennine Express
  • Avanti West Coast
  • West Midlands Trains
  • GTR (including Gatwick Express)
