Edinburgh city centre residents fume as noisy restaurant goers 'scream and smash bottles'

A Edinburgh resident claims drunken restaurant goers have been screaming and smashing bottles all night around Bristo Square.

The woman took to social media to urge those visiting the pubs and bars in square to be respectful, after describing the past week as an "absolute nightmare".

In her post, she stated that she and her partner have been struggling to sleep due to the booming noise and loud music coming from the streets below.

The last few weeks have seen a sudden surge in Edinburgh's nightlife, after pubs, bars and restaurants were able to reopen indoors on July 15.

Since lockdown measures eased, most hospitality sites around the city have been packed with excited locals enjoying themselves after months of lockdown.

However, the spike in groups socialising has caused locals to find the last few weeks extremely stressful, with large groups said to be "screaming, shouting and smashing bottles on the street."

In her post on a local Edinburgh Facebook group, she stated:

"Can I just ask people drinking at Boteco do Brasil and at Paradise Palms, and at Bristo Square to remember that there are people that live in the flats opposite and above.

"The last week or so has been an absolute nightmare. There's been people screaming and shouting, smashing bottles on the street etc. There's been groups drinking and playing very, very loud music at Bristo Square well into the early hours of the morning, during the week and at the weekend.

"We all need to live here and some people are still working during all of this. My partner works in a very stressful position with a lot of responsibility and is beginning to be very affected by the constant noise and lack of sleep.

"I've approached groups peacefully and I've contacted the police, and it keeps happening. People in these groups need to take responsibility for their own behaviour and realise that not everyone is on the same schedule as them."

Other locals quickly responded to the post, with many stating that noise is common in the city centre, especially around bars and restaurants.

However, many also jumped to the couple's defence, with one woman stating:

"Noise is one thing and yes it is expected in the centre to a degree. However, drunk and disorderly people screaming, shouting and smashing bottles in the street is another thing and is not acceptable".
