Edinburgh flats fire as crews rush to morning blaze at a multi-storey block

A fire has broken out at a block of flats in Edinburgh on Tuesday morning, May 31.

Firefighters are currently on the scene at the blaze on Slateford Gait as large clouds of black smoke can be seen billowing into the air.

Crews were alerted to the fire just before 8am on Tuesday and a spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue has confirmed that they are still in attendance, but eye witnesses on the scene have since reported the fire has been put out, although the damage to the ground floor flat is sizeable.

Four appliances and one height appliance were deployed by the fire service as smoke was seen shooting out of one of the flats and up the side of the multi-storey building.

One on-looker reported seeing one casualty being 'dragged' out of the building to safety.

Another eye witness, 51-year-old Mark Brown, said: " I woke up this morning after hearing some shouting. I thought it might have been an altercation, I looked out the window and all I could see were flames coming from the building.

"People were shouting 'fire, fire' and there was a lot of smoke pouring out of the bottom floor flat. To be fair, around five minutes later the fire brigade were here. As you can see the bottom row of flats have been completely gutted. The first time I saw it I thought 'wow I hope nobody is trapped in there', but it seemed to get dealt with really quickly.

The location of the incident is just off Slateford Road and next to the railway line.

It is currently unclear what caused the blaze and if there are any reported injuries from the scene, however one on-looker said that the fire seems to be under control at the moment.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We are currently in attendance at a fire at Slateford Gait in Edinburgh that is ongoing.

"The call came in around 7:46am and four appliances with one height appliance have been deployed so far, with crews still on scene tackling the blaze."
