Edinburgh fire crews called to Royal Mile after blaze breaks out in shop

Fire crews were called to Edinburgh's Royal Mile after a blaze broke out inside a shop.

Emergency services were called to attend at a store on the city's High Street shortly after midday on Friday. A cordon could be seen up near the Barnets shoes shop, with several people standing outside.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say they were contacted after people reported a burning smell in the area.

On arrival firefighters found a small fire affecting a light fitting. This was put out and the area was made safe. There were no reported injuries.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.06pm on Friday, August 20 to reports of a smell of burning within a commercial property on High Street, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and one height vehicle and firefighters extinguished a small fire affecting a light fitting.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
