Edinburgh cyclist captures 'dangerous' moment bus overtakes him on busy street

An Edinburgh cyclist has captured on film the 'dangerous' moment a bus overtook him on South Bridge.

The man, who regularly posts footage of his cycle trips to Twitter, says the lack of space for cycling shows the city's 'non existent cycling infrastructure'. Edinburgh Council has said they take cycle safety 'very seriously'.

After tweeting the video, he received support from other cyclists who agreed the bus had passed him too closely.

The cyclist, who prefers to remain anonymous, told Edinburgh Live: "See this as a shocking reminder as to why hitting the council's declared 30 percent reduction in car journeys would be unachievable with the current non existing cycling infrastructure."

In response to his tweet, Ian Barker said: "Painted lines on the road are more dangerous than no painted lines on the road for exactly this reason, take the lane in future."

Other cyclists responded to the tweet. Mathew Pearson responded: "I would ignore that cycle lane and take up down that road. I would care nothing for the traffic honking from behind and it is much safer that way."

Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “Changes to the Highway Code include guidance that drivers should give cyclists a car width’s space when passing them, and I would urge all drivers to heed this regardless of whether there is an advisory cycle lane in place, in the interests of vulnerable road users safety.

“We take cycle safety, along with that of other vulnerable road users, extremely seriously in Edinburgh. I am certain, however, that segregation is preferable to advisory cycle lanes. That’s why we’re investing in a range of projects to expand cycling, walking an wheeling infrastructure across the city, as well as improving road safety and raising awareness amongst drivers.”

Lothian Buses have been approached for comment.
