Edinburgh Covid cases predicted to drop dramatically according to experts

The number of Covid cases being registered in Edinburgh is predicted to dramatically plummet according to experts.

A map created by Imperial College London analyses current Covid data to predict where in the UK is set to become a 'Covid hotspot' and according to their predictions, the city of Edinburgh will start registering fewer cases than anywhere else in the central belt.

The map predicts that in the week beginning 7 February 2021, Edinburgh will have a 0 per cent probability of registering more than 100 cases that week, and only a 20 per cent probability of registering more than 50 cases.

Despite, Edinburgh on track to become an oasis of low Covid cases, the same can't immediately be said for neghbouring local authority West Lothian.

According to the data from the Imperial College London map, in the week beginning 7 February 2021, West Lothian will be considered a 'Covid hotspot' alongside much of West Scotland.

The area is predicted to have a 86 per cent chance of registering more than 100 cases that week and a 99 per cent chance of registering more than 50.

Despite having such close proximity to West Lothian, cases in Edinburgh are predicted by the model to continue to plummet as the weeks go on, with the chance of Edinburgh predicting more than 50 cases in a week dropping to just 11 per cent on the week beginning by 14 February. The model also predicts a zero per cent chance of the city registering more than 100 cases that week.

This is a stark contrast to West Lothian who will still have a 99 per cent chance of registering more than 50 cases and an 84 per cent chance of registering more than 100, according to the experts.

The projections assume that lockdown levels and behaviour patterns do not change for about a week before the end of observations. The site also notes that an increase in cases in an area could be an increase in testing rather than an increase in transmission.

Despite the predictions, Edinburgh is currently registering more coronavirus cases than West Lothian, with 351 registered this week compared to 245 in West Lothian.
