Edinburgh city centre Filmhouse to get jaw-dropping skyline bar in new plans

New plans for an Edinburgh city centre Filmhouse with a skyline bar located on Lothian Road are to be submitted next month by Richard Murphy Architects.

The amended planning application for the £60m Filmhouse project in the capital is expected to be lodged next month. Plans for the new entertainment complex were unveiled back in 2020 and included a nine storey building with a rooftop bar.

The Centre for the Moving Image, which runs both the Filmhouse and the Edinburgh film festival, is looking to create the building in Festival Square on Lothian Road.

There are already a number of cinemas and entertainment complexes nearby including Fountain Park, The Odeon on Lothian Road, the Filmhouse and the Cameo in Tollcross.

Local planners, Richard Murphy Architects have said in an update that they hope to gain approval by the end of this year.

Original plans revealed two years ago were backed by actor Tilda Swinton and author Irvine Welsh and it was expected work would begin on the project in 2023.

The idea was first introduced in 2004 but never submitted for planning permission but since then the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Filmhouse merged to form the "Centre for the Moving Image".

In 2019 the new Board commissioned two options, to either completely rebuild of the existing Filmhouse site on Lothian Road or to to look again at creating a new space in Festival Square.

The Board decided to progress with the second option. The City Council has agreed to lease the site to the Filmhouse and to the principle of constructing a Filmhouse there.

Heritage body the Cockburn Association said earlier that the development “would result in a significant impact to the area and undermine the character and potential of an existing civic space”.

Richard Murphy Architects said in its update: “After a long negotiation with the planning department we are resubmitting an amended planning application for the Filmhouse in August, with the hope that permission will be secured by the end of the year.”
