Edinburgh bypass drivers face diversions as busy junction to close overnight

Edinburgh drivers have been warned as a major section of the city bypass is due to close overnight.

BEAR Scotland has issued an alert to motorists that a section of the A720 will be shutting on Wednesday evening, September 7, to allow for essential works.

The project to resurface the slip road off the eastbound bypass onto Hermiston Gait Roundabout is expected to take three nights to complete.

For the safety of workers and road users during these works, the eastbound carriageway of the A720 between Gogar Roundabout and Hermiston Gait Roundabout will be closed from 8.30pm to 6.00am on the nights of 7, 8 and 9 September.

A diversion route will be signposted via South Gyle Broadway, Bankhead Drive, Broomhouse Road (B701) and Calder Road (A71).

Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will address and repair defects in the road surface such as potholes and cracks, creating safer and smoother journeys for motorists.

“It is essential for the safety of the workforce that we close the carriageway during these works, however, we’ve scheduled this during overnight hours to minimise any disruption.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these improvements.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website www.trafficscotland.org for up-to-date travel information and allowing extra time for their journey.
