Edinburgh and Lothians Tesco stores remove one-way system in huge new shake up of shopping rules

Tesco stores around the UK, including in Edinburgh and the Lothians, have started to ease their social distancing rules for shoppers - including scrapping the one way system and reducing queues outside stores during the coronavirus pandemic.

More people will be allowed inside stores at one time, in a move that might cause a bit of anxiety to some.

However one Penicuik woman praised the scenes inside her local Tesco after the changes, saying:

"Was just in Tescos and no one way system now but still distancing markers in place ... but I thought it worked well as if you see an aisle busier then can just go to another one that's quieter or without folk and not needing to stick to one way.

"So got round without passing anyone. Felt it was more relaxed but still safe, anyway just thought I'd say."

The supermarket chain has told The Sun it is easing some of these shopping restrictions as more people return to the high street following the easing of lockdown.

The supermarket - which has around 3,700 UK stores - said it will still monitor how many customers visit, but some branches will now increase in their entry limits.

This, it said, would be at the manager's discretion and subject to each store's size.

Tesco also confirmed its one-way systems have been removed, although the supermarket will still ask customers to stay two metres apart.

Stores will still have floor markings in place to remind shoppers to social distance.

In addition, Tesco has also increased its 80-item limit to 95 items as stock levels return to normal.

The grocer still has a three-per-person limit on face coverings, antibacterial handwash, antibacterial wipes, flour, and eggs.

Elderly and vulnerable shoppers still also get priority access on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am until 10am.
