Edinburgh A1 road closed and huge queues as crash sees car 'flipped on its roof'

Edinburgh motorists are facing delays entering the city due to a collision on a busy main road in which a car reportedly flipped over.

A section of the A1 outside Queen Margaret University is currently closed due to the single vehicle crash, with bus diversions in place until the road opens.

Police raced to the bypass around 12:30pm on Tuesday, July 26, with one motorist reporting seeing a car on its roof and queues starting to built near Fort Kinnaird.

Lothian Buses issued a live travel alert for services X5, X6 and X7, saying: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve A1 Eastbound and are instead diverted via Milton Link, Milton Road East, Edinburgh Road, North High Street, Bridge Street, Musselburgh High Street, Newbigging, Inveresk Villiage Road, Carberry Road and Salters Road eastbound only until further notice."

A section of the bypass was recently closed off and a new temporary road made due to the ongoing construction works either side of the university. The road is increasingly busy during peak times of the day, with traffic seemingly being diverted down a nearby slip road to avoid the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a crash involving a single vehicle on the A1 near the junction with Newcraighall Road in Edinburgh shortly after 12.05am on Tuesday, 26 July.

"Emergency services are currently at the scene and the road is currently closed."
