The Bears will go forward with Eddy Pineiro as their kicker for the opener Thursday against the Packers.

Pineiro survived the initial roster cut Saturday, and the Bears did not claim a kicker on waivers. The waiver claim period ended this morning.

“His body of work,” coach Matt Nagy said of Pineiro. “We feel like he certainly earned it.”

Pineiro beat out Elliott Fry and many prospective kickers over the last few months and closed the preseason by hitting a 58-yard field goal against the Colts, followed by a 3-for-3 night in the finale against the Titans despite missing an extra point.

Pineiro, 23, will be the Bears’ youngest and least-experienced kicker since Robbie Gould’s debut in 2005. He has never kicked in a regular-season game.
