Eddie Howe's 'thank you' to Newcastle United fans as summer transfer hunt gets under way

Eddie Howe says that Newcastle United fans have helped him feel right at home on Tyneside.

Howe is coming to the end of his first full season at St James' Park and is close to leading the Magpies into Europe for the first time since Alan Pardew did so in 2012. Victory against West Ham will give the black and whites every chance of qualifying for at least one of the three UEFA competitions this season.

Howe believes that the feeling of being settled is helping the club's cause and has thanked the supporters for their warm welcome.

The Newcastle head coach said: "I feel at home here. I don’t say that lightly. I feel at home in the area, I feel at home with the people and I definitely feel at home with the football club. I think it is a very special place."

Howe's next big rebuilding phase will get under way in the summer transfer window with decisions already being made behind the scenes at Benton.

Howe said: “There is a huge amount of work for us to do (in the summer) on every level. Football never stands still. The teams competing with us will all try and do the same thing.

"We need to be smart with what we do and we are on a journey that is accelerating very quickly and we need to match that with our decision-making."
