Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has landed himself in trouble with his suggestion that people should get receipts for small cash jobs and services, including casual gardening work. Balls insists he always writes out a receipt for such work, no matter how small the amount, although his window cleaner claimed Balls has never given him a receipt.
In fact, cash buyers are under no obligation to ask for or keep receipts, but Balls’s scrupulousness on this point, as these examples below from his receipts drawer show, is a testament to his desire to keep all his business transactions fair, square and above board.
