Eastwood encourages Derry people to get behind Sarcoma Awareness Month

SDLP Leader and MP for Foyle Colum Eastwood has encouraged the people of Derry to get behind local charity ' Paul's Campaign ' in support of Sarcoma awareness this July.

Paul's Campaign was established in memory of Paul Coyle, who died after being diagnosed with sarcoma age 26.

Colum Eastwood said: "Around 5,300 people are diagnosed with sarcoma in the UK every year and around 120 people are diagnosed in Northern Ireland each year, but still 3 out of 4 people have never heard of the illness."

Sarcoma is an uncommon and fast-spreading cancer that develop in the muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and the fatty and fibrous tissues.

Eastwood said: "It is crucial that people in Derry are aware of the symptoms and that early, fast and accurate diagnosis is gotten as soon as possible. We have fantastic local awareness charities here in the Northwest to provide people with essential information and support when they need it.

Colum Eastwood also praised the work done by healthcare professionals dealing with patients with sarcoma.

He said: "During Sarcoma Awareness Month, it's important that we also recognise the hard work and dedication of our health and social care and Hospice staff for all they do to support patients.

"These past 15 months have been very challenging in providing the best physical and psychological care possible, but our staff have stepped up to help those in need.

"I would encourage everyone in Derry to get behind our local Sarcoma awareness campaigns this month, find out the signs and symptoms of sarcoma and help save lives."
