EastEnders viewers compare racist character to comedy star Catherine Tate's Nan

EastEnders viewers were shocked on Thursday evening when one character was subjected to racism in the workplace.

In the latest episode of the BBC soap, nurse Ash Kaur was at work in the local hospital when she encountered a rude patient who didn't want to be treated by her.

The scene began with Ash asking the patient: "Right, Mrs Davis how are we getting on?"

"Not you, I don't want you again," she replied rudely. "I want to see the other doctor, the man. You left my arms black and blue last time."

"Ah well I'm afraid I'm the only one available right now," Ash responded, as the woman continued: "I want a doctor with proper qualifications."

Defending herself, Ash said: "I was at medical school for five years I can assure you I'm definitely a qualified doctor."

"I want someone from here," the racist patient demanded as Ash replied: "Erm I am from here."

"I mean really from here," she told her as Ash's face dropped and she realised what she meant.

"I'm sorry you don't think I'm from here?" she asked her as the woman replied: "I just want someone else."

Ash looked visibly upset and when fellow nurse Sonia asked her she was alright, Ash decided to keep it to herself.

EastEnders fans were disgusted by the scene and took to Twitter to comment.

"Horrible racist woman, she should be lucky that anyone is treating her #EastEnders," one said.

Another posted: "Oh dear Ash. That woman in the waiting has been rather erm, nasty to put it mildly. Quite unnecessary. She's lucky to be seen so quickly. Very ungrateful #EastEnders."

A third viewer tweeted: "Well she's rude, poor Ash. #EastEnders."

Another added: "That was unbelievable but sadly happens every day all day in nhs hospitals #EastEnders."

Other viewers compared the racist patient to Catherine Tate's character Nan.

"Wait - was that Catherine Tate dressed up as Nan? #Eastenders," one asked.

Another tweeted: "I genuinely thought that old woman was Catherine Tate playing nan #eastenders @bbceastenders."

Ash called taxi driver Harvey a 'racist pig' after he made a nasty comment towards her (BBC)

Someone else added: "That woman in the wheelchair looks like Catherine Tate as Nan! #Eastenders."

Later on in the episode, Ash hit back at taxi driver Harvey after he made a racist comment towards her after driving her home.

"I dunno why I expect anything different, it's always the same with you lot," Harvey told her as Ash looked shocked.

She ended up branding him a "racist pig" as she shouted at him in the street while Harvey told her she was "out of order" and putting words in his mouth.
