EastEnders star teases drama for surrogacy plot future after Bernadette baby twist

EastEnders aired a baby bombshell on Monday night, as Bernadette Taylor learned she was pregnant.

The teen had agreed to carry a child for Rainie and Stuart Highway, with the couple desperate for a baby.

Rainie is unable to carry a child due to fertility issues, and she has been searching for the right surrogate for her baby.

She wasn't initially keen on Bernie carrying her child because of her age, while doctors also warned her weight could complicate the ovulation process.

Rainie has no idea that Bernadette has been taking diet pills in a bid to lose weight, desperate to help the couple have a baby - while also wanting the money to pay off her family's debts.

Bernie was not expecting to fall pregnant so soon after the process, especially after the doctor's warning, so the news left her stunned in recent scenes.

Now, actress Clair Norris has teased the future of the storyline as Bernie is determined to go through with the surrogacy despite her family being worried.

Amid her continuing to take diet pills as well as fears she will not be able to hand over the child after they are born, the star teased what was ahead.

With Bernie also having suffered a miscarriage in the past, Clair exclusively told The Mirror that her character would have a lot going on in her head throughout the pregnancy.

She explained of whether she might struggle to hand the baby over to Rainie: "That's obviously a big factor of having a miscarriage and getting attached to the baby.

"It's is always gonna be a worry for the Taylors and Rainie and Stuart, as well as Bernie. I think Bernie's mind is so focused on carrying the baby and not having a miscarriage and handing the baby over, because she knows as soon as the baby is handed over she gets that final instalment.

"That's all the money for her family, so she is kind of thinking along those lines but there is that worry of a young girl carrying a baby for nine months, having lost a baby, there is that side of it.

"Is she gonna give it over or is she gonna go the opposite way? Will she even want to deal with the baby and will she say, 'there you go', there's that side as well."

On what is ahead for the plot, she went on: "There's a lot going on with Bernie. A lot of storylines have been interlinked with the surrogacy, there's the money and family, the weight loss... it kind of ties in with the baby storyline.

"There is a lot going on and lots of different reactions and different consequences, and things that are played out. There is a lot going on at once and it's all a drama!"

EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
