EastEnders' Jo Joyner teases Tanya Branning return but is terrified she'll be killed off

EastEnders star Jo Joyner, who played Tanya Branning on the BBC soap, has teased her potential return after nearly three years.

Jo, who was last on the show in February 2018, said she would "never say never" to coming back, but admitted she was nervous.

She said she was scared that if she did come back, her character would be killed off once and for all, or it could even happen off screen.

"I would never say never, I really wouldn't," she said.

"Because I'm so fond of that Branning family, and what they created and who they all might have become. Yes, I would one day.

"But I [Tanya] may well die as well. I'm at the mercy of scripts. There could be a phone call at any minute where somebody just drops it, looks white and says, 'She's dead'."

Tanya was married to Max Branning (Jake Wood) until his affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner).

She then married Greg Jessop but had an affair with Max which began on her wedding day.

Her eldest daughter, Lauren Branning, battled cervical cancer and she witnessed Lauren and her other daughter Abi falling off the roof of the Queen Vic.

Tanya had a mental breakdown when Abi died and then left the soap in 2009 while Jo went on maternity leave/

She returned in 2010, but took another break in 2012. She came back in 2015 for two episodes as part of the programme's 30th anniversary, and then appeared in four more episodes between December 2015 and February 2018.

EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
